Teaching & Learning

Students & Staff

In 2008 our staff consists of 3 experienced teachers.  The school is staffed by a number of para-professionals with a vast array of skills, talents and knowledge.  All classes have access to a teacher-aide, with others assuming roles such as tracking, intervention and library support.  Specialist and special needs teachers are provided on an itinerant basis from Cooktown and include a Guidance Officer and Head of Curriculum. The school also has a Community Participation Officer.

Currently the student population is 57  P - 7 students.  The cross-cultural nature of the
school is evident by a significant number of Aboriginal students which represent approximately 85% of the student population.

Curriculum

The school operates under the Bound for Success Curriculum Framework (Cape York Curriculum) from Prep to Year 7 with a focus on meeting the needs of all students.  Bound for Success allows us the ability to implement a flexible 3 year curriculum plan which incorporates moderated assessment activities, continual revision of planning and the ability to cater for students who move about within our region.
The curriculum activities have been designed to use local knowledge and expertise as a major contributing resource.  An array of intervention strategies offers a significant contribution to early literacy and numeracy programs.

At present, our school has 3 primary classes, (Prep/1/2,  3/4/5/,  5/6/7,  which are all Multi-Aged Groups (MAG).  Even though the number of children in each year level doesn't permit year level grouping, the school is committed to the maintenance of MAG class; A Whole School approach to curriculum delivery is a major focus at our school. Within this approach, a sense of community is fostered and encouraged between members of the school and wider community.
